Google had a word limit of 10 up until January 2005, when they raised it to the more relaxed 32. (Which was cool especially for the SOAP API, as you’d often hack together longer strings using it… while the SOAP API still worked, that is.) http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2005-01-22-n48.html

A Google search for the phrase “was ignored because we limit queries to 32 words” shows that it’s been around for a couple of years.
