Blogger Filled with Spam?
Blogger March 22nd, 2007 - By HaochiA story titled “75 per cent of Google’s blogspot blogs are spam” made to Digg’s homepage a few hours ago. I know that there are a lot of splogs on Blogger, but 75%? That’s a crazy exaggeration!
Jason Goldman, Blogger’s ex-Product Manager, seems to agree with my viewpoint (okay, maybe I agree with him).
In any case, it turns out that the study didn’t look at all URLs and count the spam. They took a bunch of commercial keywords like “prescription drugs” or “cheap tickets” and looked at the percentage of sites that were spam for specific domains. It’s not terribly surprising that a high percentage of spammy sites would be found.
A 2006 study shows that there only less than 0.4% of Blogger profiles are owned by sploggers. Also, note that the Digg story was based on a study done in part by Microsoft - a rival of Google.
I personally have only been to a few splogs on Blogger accidentally, what about you?

A few weeks back I did my own pop-survey of about 250 sites (http://blog.arhg.net/2007/01/next-blog.html). It suggests that about 10% of blogger’s blogs are spam and about 15% are redirects off blogger to sites elsewhere. I didn’t find these blogs via blogsearch but used the Next >> button in the blogbar.
