Doodle: Google’s 9th Birthday

Doodle

google celebrates 9th birthday

Looks like the Googlers feel like having cakes today - they are celebrating Google’s 9th birthday.

Google opened its doors in September 1998. The exact date when we celebrate our birthday has moved around over the years, depending on when people feel like having cake. [Google.com]

Happy birthday Google, thank you for everything. :)

Doodle: Moon Festival

Doodle

google logo moon festival 2007

Google China today is celebrating the Moon Festival, a traditional Asian/Chinese holiday that I am familiar with. :)

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is a popular Asian celebration of abundance and togetherness, dating back over 3,000 years to China’s Zhou Dynasty. [Wikipedia]

I think Google’s been sending moon cakes to Chinese bloggers.

UPDATE: I knew that there will be one for Google Korea, but I can’t see it for some reason… (last night, this morning, and just now) [thanks jeannoel, link found on Zorgloob]

Doodle: Roald Dahl Birthday

Google UK today celebrates author Roald Dahl’s birthday.

Roald Dahl (13 September 1916 – 23 November 1990) was a Welsh novelist, short story author and screenwriter of Norwegian parentage, famous as a writer for both children and adults. His most popular books include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The Witches and The BFG. [Wikipedia]

I don’t think I have ever read any of his books but I watched the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie.

Doodle: Russia Knowledge Day

Doodle

russia knowledge day 2007 google logo

Google Russia today celebrates Knowledge Day (Sept. 1st), “the day when the school year traditionally starts in Russia and many other former USSR republics. It has special significance for the incoming class of 1st graders who come to school for the first time and often participate in a celebratory assembly on this date.” [Wikipedia]

I started school a few days ago and it was just plainly miserable, though I consider myself pretty lucky comparing to those who aren’t able to attend school for whatever reason. School is heaven and hell (figure of speech), depending on how you look at it.

UPDATE: There’s also one for the Israeli children, “Back to School 07“. Shalom Kita Alef!

Doodle: Malaysia Independence Day

Doodle

malaysia independence day 2007 google doodle

Malaysia today celebrates Hari Merdeka, their 50th Independence Day.

Hari Merdeka (Independence Day) is a national day of Malaysia commemorating the independence of the Federation of Malaya from British colonial rule. In a wider context, it is to celebrate the formation of Malaysia. [Wikipedia]

Almost every year, they have a new theme for the Independence Day, and this year’s theme is “My Glorious Malaysia”. No offense, but somehow it make me think about “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan“.

China, Doodle

beijing 2008 summer olympics

The 2008 Summer Olympics‘ opening ceremony will be held exactly 1 year from now (366 days, next year is a leap year) in Beijing and Google China is celebrating this special day with the weird looking Google Doodle.

The Google logo is overlapped by 2008 (took me well over 2 mins to notice that). This logo is the first doodle to include the Google’s Chinese name “Guge”, as pointed out by the Official Google China Blog.

Google Switzerland today celebrates the 716th Swiss National Day.

Following a public vote on 26 September 1993, it was made an official national holiday in 1994. It is celebrated each year on August 1st with town-wide paper lantern parades, bonfires, hanging strings of Swiss flags and fireworks.

Looks like Yannick is going to have fun today. :D

Doodle: Cyrillic Alphabet Day

Doodle

google cyrllic logo 2007

Don’t know how did I miss it, but I think every doodle I come across deserved to be mentioned. On May 24, Google Bulgaria celebrates the Cyrillic Alphabet Day, also known as the Saints Cyril and Methodius Day.

It commemorates the creation of the Slavic Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabets by the Byzantine Greeks brothers Saints Cyril and Methodius. [...] The celebration also commemorates the introduction of literacy and the preaching of the gospels in the Slavonic language by the brothers.

That Cyrillic letter substituting the “L” on the doodle is not Pi, I just found out. It’s actually “El“.

Genius.

Doodle 4 Google: My Australia

Doodle

doodle 4 google my future

I have totally missed this (it didn’t get much publicity), but anyways, Google’s holding another Doodle 4 Google drawing competition in the U.K., which students age 4-18 can compete for a trip to Googleplex and to fame of having his/her winning design on Google for 24 hours. This year’s theme is “My Future”. Deadline for this one would be on July 22, 2007.

doodle for google my australia

Also, Google Australia launched the Australian version of the competition, “Doodle for Google - My Australia“.

This year’s theme is ‘My Australia’ and we’re asking young people to communicate their own image of Australia and what it means to be Australian using the Google logo. [...] There’s no right or wrong answer – we’re hoping young people will bring their own fresh, creative vision of their life in Australia to the competition.

The winner would receive “$10,000 worth of technology equipment for their school as well as a 15-inch: 2.4 GHz Macbook Pro for themselves”, as well as having his/her logo be on Google Australia on Australia Day 2008 for 24 hours.

Wow, that’s going to be really cool even without the Googleplex visit, it’s something that you can brag about to your children and grandchildren - if the Internet still haven’t crashed and they know what Google is.
