Doodle: Russia Day
Doodle June 12th, 2007 - By HaochiGoogle today celebrates Russia Day, hehe, on Google Russia, of course.
Russia Day is a holiday of national unity celebrated in Russia on June 12. On this day, in 1990, Russian parliament formally declared its sovereignty. [...] While the holiday has been officially recognized since 1991 when it was established by Boris Yeltsin, 2003 is the first year that it was celebrated in a major way, when promoted by Vladimir Putin. There was a big parade in Moscow. [Wikipedia]
The tower representing the “L” in the logo above should be the Spasskaya Tower, “the main tower with a through-passage on the eastern wall of the Moscow Kremlin, which overlooks the Red Sqaure.”

Google celebrated Russia Day last year as well.
UPDATE: Oops, that logo actually says “Victory Day“, as Slav pointed out in the comment. Maybe I should take a Russian course. :) [thanks Slav and Aragorn]

The second doodle is not related to Russia Day. It celebrates the “Victory Day”, 9th of May, remembered by the former Soviet Union as the day Germany was defeated in WWII.
(As I remember it growing up there :) )

Slav is absolutely correct about May 9th.
The image actually says “Victory Day!”
