Gmail Updates Storage Estimation
Gmail October 11th, 2007 - By Haochi
Gmail today updated their home page’s storage estimation. The new entries indicates that the storage will be:
- 2912MB by October 11, 2007 midnight Google time
- 4.2GB by the 23rd this month
- 6GB by January 4th next year
- 42GB by the year of 2038
- and 2.70266701 × 1072 TB* by 1/2/3456 7:00
The first three seems to be quite realistic, but the latter two, hmm… I hope that this isn’t what happened at Google.
*way more that a Googol Megabyte
UPDATE: The Official Gmail Blog confirmed this, adding that users of Google Apps will also see a boost in storage.

Where did you found it. In the Page Source of gmail.com i just find the old:

Nice dig! I think it is highly likely to be true because they also updated the rate for paid storage.
Before it was this:
6 GB ($20.00 USD per year)
25 GB ($75.00 USD per year)
100 GB ($250.00 USD per year)
250 GB ($500.00 USD per year)
Now it is:
10 GB ($20.00 USD per year)
40 GB ($75.00 USD per year)
150 GB ($250.00 USD per year)
400 GB ($500.00 USD per year)
So paying $20 a year for 10GB is the same as before - 6GB extra. Simple maths, right? :P

The Counter on the homepage (I don’t know what Startseite (it’s German) in Englisch), when you are not logged in, is wrong.
In GMail I have 2929 MB, but the Counter shows 2911 MB

Not nice at all, I want the 42GB NOW. Yahoo or Hotmail, I don’t know which one gives unlimited storage these days. I think Google can afford the increase now.

I’m paying 75$/year and it’s up from 25-28GB. Fingers crossed it keeps climbing, cause I’m already using 30%.

Now I’m confused in a different way… the values that hebbet found are the same as was reported in March of this year, but the values behind this post are very, very, very large. My curiosity builds on the fact that if my email traffic stays constant, and I throw nothing out, I expect to max out under the old caps in the end of August 2008, so I love the idea of increased allotments.

Yeah. Now I just hope that they increase Picasa Web’s storage as well, because my plan is going to be expired in a few days and my storage is running OUT!

Yeah, you can on the right track. There’s a Wikipedia article explaining this time format. It’s commonly used on Unix-based OSes and programming languages.
Since the update is new, I suspect that hebbet didn’t have his/her cache emptied, that’s why the old values are showing up.

There really seems to be an issue with the counter:
Mine got stuck at 2948 MB this afternoon, my friend’s is at 2961 MB.
On the login page, counting is in the previous pace, now at 2912 MB…
Browser cache cleared, btw.

Very nice effort from Google but competition is ahead, lets see these free storage will put thin clients on the way to Mars. Free Office, free photo organizer and so on

Well, it’s up to 3159 MB, and it seems to be updating about every ten minutes, which is the approximate rate of increase (5 MB/hr). This is certainly an exciting development, though unconditional unlimited storage would be better (Yahoo!’s has some strings attached, as I understand it). Though since I use about 1 MB every few days on the average, I don’t think I’ll ever run out now.

seriously though…i have serious doubts about using remote storage for any data that you don’t want to lose….and as the remote storage capacity goes up, so does the propensity for using the storage exclusively for large amounts of data..with no local backup.
if there is no actual need to have worldwide access to this data…then one can buy a 1Tb disk for a few hundred dollars nowadays. i certainly wouldn’t risk important data (say original digital photos) on remote only storage. And once you have decent local storage, the case for vast amounts of remote storage becomes rather trivial.

I wonder if there’s a possibility that some service will open up that gives unlimited storage for digital photo originals. That would help me, seeing as how I have three gigs of photos, and counting. Either that, or I have to get the money for an external hard drive…
