Google Online Marketing Challenge
AdWords, Contest November 13th, 2007 - By HaochiGoogle will be holding a competition during March and May next year called to “Google Online Marketing Challenge“, opened to students of higher education institutions from anywhere in the world (I bet that they won’t accept applications from North Korea, Iran, Cuba, etc…).
Students will work with local businesses to devise effective online marketing campaigns. They will outline a strategy, run their campaign (using AdWords), assess their results and provide the business with recommendations to further develop their online marketing.
Global winners will receive a trip to the Googleplex in Mountain View and meet the AdWords developers, and regional winners are invited to their local Google office.

I think its BS that its only open to students/schools. I would bet that some of the better SEMs in the world have spent more time in research than in traditional schools where the curriculum would be considered ’stale’ in an industry which is constantly changing.

Right said Timmee, but let’s not forget - Google’s step is more of a PR exercise and planned at attracting some fresh talent for it’s offices - which otherwise would work only through costly recruitment ads all over the world. And, let’s not forget the potentially high AdWords money flowing in from the exercise.

Good points. There are tons of opportunities in internet fields like marketing & programming if you can prove you’re as good as or even better than someone who learned it in school. I guess it just bugged me a little that an open-minded company like Google would think that way. But yur right.

Hey Haochi, cool blog. Adding it to my RSS reader now.
Just wanted to ask if any colleges actually teach search engine marketing as part of the curriculum. If so, what a waste of tuition dollars…
Penn State University is participating in the Gomcha in its College of Information Sciences and Technology. But there is little or no undergraduate research being done in this field.

I would not doubt that if a group of individual like ourselves put in a formal request to the competition organizers and request to form a team and compete against those university teams, they might allow it. contact sy@sirnitti.com if you would like to sign up for the 2009 competition and stay updated.

As a professor who taught a course and participated in the Challenge, it was really up-todate and cutting edge. Some of the teams did outstanding!

After having participated in the Challenge and seeing the other contestants and professors registered for the event on http://www.gomcha.com, I must say that Google organized an amazing academic experience that involved its Adwords platform.
