I belive I should endeavour to become a part of the Google team as I am extremely fond of writing and consider it an art form. The pen is mightier than the swrord and in case of the computer the keyboard. It helps us to express ourselves regardless of superfivial differences and articulate our concerns within the framework of a changing mileu. I also feel writing can take on many parts–to lure or sell,to educate,to satisfy creative instincts, for expressing certain subversive functions. In short I would love to be a part of this competiton.
September 21st, 2006 at 6:34 pm
According to the Terms and Conditions, “you must be a legal resident of India, 18 years old or older.” If you are in the contest, hopefully you can be one of the winners. :D

Google is doing it again. Now not just online but offline, it reaches the people. Such inovative ideas should involve more people. Maybe Google should identify more experts in various fields.
A word or two won’t suffice to write about google’s novel ideas.
All the best for Google and participants.

Hi all.
I am goggled at google’s ways of finding the best talent available out there. Google is googling out for talent and it cannot be better than this. This is one of the recommended ways to fish out the really talented ones having an instinct towards writing and that too effectively.

COMMUNICATION GAP!
300 people had registered for the contest,
Many didn’t receive even the venue details,
I tried contacting all the centers of Google India but none of them were reachable.
There was no clue of where the contest was even held in the respective cities.
After I exhausted all my efforts in finding it, I CONCLUDED THAT GOOGLE HAD FAILED IN FINDING ITS WRITER due to a big communication gap who didn’t even take proper responsibility to inform its participants the venue of the contest.
September 30th, 2006 at 8:36 pm
Nithya,
Umm, Deepak Yadav said he was at the competition though… Well, it is weird that you can’t reach “all the centers of Google India”…
September 30th, 2006 at 10:01 pm
Everones time n energy is valuable!!
please dont waste them.
It was ofcourse Google’s responsibility to atleast inform the venues of the contest in the respective cities to the participants.
The message over the phone said,”this no.does not exist” in the nos. found http://www.google.com/corporate/address.html.
Many enteries in this page do say that the details of the venue havent been received!!
It is ofcourse easy to say but very hard to experience!
No further arguments please.
October 1st, 2006 at 1:16 am
To those who complained about not receiving an invite: it’s possible that contest invites weren’t sent out merely on a first-come first-served basis. I got my invite via email, then a reminder, and then a phone call confirming the time. I noticed that the Bombay venue alone had 300 participants (or more), so the total number of hopefuls from all over India could be ten times that.
October 1st, 2006 at 11:35 pm
I agree with some of the people above.I f aany official / informed person from google is reading this, kindly just inform me why I never received any intimation-
1) Because I was registered after the magical number of 300..?( Which is weird,as I personally think the registration facility should be removed from the site once the entry limit is over)
2) The performed a detailed analysis of the person’s biodata from teh minimal details obtained during registration ( Quite innovative)and rejected my application…
I think Gooogle, being what it is, ought to be much more well organized…Look into this matter, otherwise we may have to approach Larry and Sergey about this..!!!

Google Wordmasters 2006 - an experience
Google Wordmasters was conducted across 10 cities in 10 cities across the country. I was one of the lucky 3000 who participated in the contest.
Here’s the experience from a man who experienced it.
I was a participant at Ahmedabad centre. At first the misconception (not only to me but to a lot of participants) was that only 300 out of the whole country would be there. So I expected around 20-30 from Ahmedabad as this was a city with the least IT savvy people compared to the other cities but to my awe, as soon as I saw around 250 people standing in the registration line, I knew I was wrong.
Hence, the conclusion was there were gonna be 2999 competiors for me !!
As I reached there, I was given a registration number at the desk and then we were led to an air conditioned auditorium. The venue was nice but still a lot of doubts here and there.
We could see a couple of youths in Google Tshirts making people envious bout them. They were working actively on the event. The head of Google from Hyderabad, Sonia Flynn, was there. She gave amazing guidelines to the restless participants who wanted to clear each and every doubt in mind (of course, which was needed guys!!)
Sonia gave a small but nice presentation on GOOGLE and also about Wordmasters 06’.
But the funny thing, was the funny questions coming from the crowd like “Can I use smileys?†“What’s the least amount of words we can write a passage on?†“Can I use French words?†etc.
Sonia was amused by the questions but managed to answer.
They gave a printed paper on which there were 2 sets of words each of a set of 20. Parcipants had to choose one of the sets and write a passage. Conditions were no one can write a passage of more than 200 words, all 20 words have to appear once in the passage and time was 1 hour inclusive of 45 min of writing, 10 min of verifying and 5 min for final check.
I had studied what the competition was before many days and so was prepared but I was not sure of getting success owing to the poor English levels of Gujarat compared to the other cities, but the competition was not much dependant on the language. It was on smart use of the time to finish a creative passage with given constraints.
The words were simple, except a few. But for me it was stressful as I wrote the passage the first time in rough in very bad handwriting to get the theme, then a second time to get it more clear, then a 3rd time to see if its all correct grammatically and also if it contains all 20 words and finally the 4th time on the actual answer sheet they had given. I found that I had written 205 words. So cut off some unnecessary words here and there. Finally I ended up at 193 words.
We submitted it and that’s it.
They gave goody bags to all, containing a big notepad, a pen, a keychain all with Google logos.
Everyone’s waiting for a call from The Google HR team. But they would call only 10 and out of 10, 3 would be winners. They would get cash prizes, a distance learning course from some top foreign university and a tour to Hyderabad Google office.
Well, I had gone because I love that brand. I admire the way it’s come up and I admire the revolutionary products they come up with. Great going GOOGLE!!
Everyone’s waiting for 30th October 2006 !!!

how we will come to know about the results…..?
October 30th, 2006 at 4:04 am
well megha even i want to know about the same.
are they just going to inform the winners or they are going to announce the winners on the web???
October 30th, 2006 at 4:16 am
Well, Megha, Google India said it will “announce” the results on October 30. Considering the huge publicity they gave while announcing the contest, I assume they’ll announce the results in an ad in the papers. Of course, they should also call you up and/or email you, because they have your contact details. But it’s October 30 already, and I don’t see any publicity stunts yet…
October 30th, 2006 at 4:23 am
I also visited (Participated) in GWM contest at New Delhi.
It was quite challenging and There were no Desks (leave aside PCs, we are so accustomed to…with MS word and all). Anyway, We were expected to write on sheet supported by Goodie Bag/NotePad sitting on an auditorium seat !!!
Contest included - 20 random Words…
You must Use all of them in your little piece between 150-200 words !!! The piece should be accurate from both gramatical angle as well as logical…
Somehow I got my Q-Paper almost 5-8 Minutes into the contest, since the volunteer simply was not coming my way, hence In about 35-40 Minutes, following was what I could put togather !!!
——————————-
Words Chosen from the Given Option
——————————-
Rethink, Humane, Meditation, Viewpoint, Soothe, Accept, Hurt, Professional, Motive, Adamant, Einstein, Control, Democratic, Anger-Management (this was togather), goodness, nerves, Adverse, Boss, Insight, Difference
——————————-
My Piece without a Spell Checker 8>0
——————————-
Serving with an NGO, for upliftment of Homeless Children, I am forced to rethink if our approach is really humane?
It all started when I suggested for Meditation for our inmates, to soothe their nerves and adjust to the adverse conditions. However, my boss had different opinions about controlling the problem, which includes usage of violence too.
In a Democratic Setup, Everyone is allowed to present their viewpoint; it is entirely up to the other person to either accept it or reject it. Now, not only has he scrapped my idea, He has started spreading bad words about my capabilities. I am really hurt by his unprofessional motives, He is adamant to create differences between me and my co-workers.
Without having any insight on the matter, or even evaluating the effects of overall goodness it will create, He has become an Authority on Anger Management. I am no Einstein but I know how to study human behavior and make them better people.

Hello people,
I too participatated at GWM in Bangalore…wondering if the results are out as yet. At another bloggers’ junction i came across a person who claims to have won and has been gifted with a Maruti Swift by Google! The other bloggers seem intrigued, but have congratulated the person, none the less, asking details of communication by google!
Will the real winner please stand up?!!!

I have heard no words on who’s the winner, but when I do, I will inform you guys, by email and will be post on this blog.
October 31st, 2006 at 10:38 pm
One expected Google to be more professional in their approach. It’s not right to mention a date for announcing results and then fail to keep one’s word. Does it take an MNC more than a month to evaluate ~3000 simple articles, each less than 200 words long? Maybe Google should have roped in our underpaid schoolteachers instead of “well-known writers”. :)
November 1st, 2006 at 3:24 am
Google Wordmasters 2006 results were scheduled to be announced on 30th October 2006. I believe the results have not been announced yet. However, there is no communication from Google on this yet. Google would do well to make a public announcement on whether the results have been declared and if not, what is the new date. This would serve the aspiring participants well.

Hi guys,
Any news at all from google… For all the hype and marketing they did i was expecting a full page ad announcing the winner of the contest… and wat do we get.,..not even a whimper…
hhmm… but did anyone read the fine print in the add they gae… it says winner will be notified by email and others can know who are the winners by sending a mail by post to the google office
So now wait pateintly till someone stands up somewhere in India and says “Hey ppl… I’m the winner”….
for all those who didn’t make it this year… dont feel bad…really… i mean it… if this is the recognition your were destined for - which i may add is hardly present- then its better there is none at all…
Cheers
Nikhil

EDIT: Original comment edited due to request, but you can still find the comment in the source code(search for “Cheers and good luck!”) of this page, or in .txt format. I support freedom of speech but when one feel uncomfortable with the comment, I will edit it.
Hi Hari,
This is just to inform you that on the other blog run by a
totally immatureperson named Harshad, I had replied to Maits too along with you, and some parts were conveniently (unethically) altered/deleted by the owner of that blog. Maybe because he felt threatened by me ( I have no clue why? Maybe, it’s because of his own insecurities). All I had written was (in very decent language) that Piali’s essay was much better than Amit’s and if Amit was mature enough to not take offence (as none was meant) then Maits too should not have reacted in the way he did.But Harshad butted in with his very offensive comment (maybe he didn’t like my appreciating Piali’s essay) and I immediately wrote back that I did not wish to write on that blog again if the owner of that blog was the owner of such lowly sensibilities. And then he claims to have blocked me.
I really appreciate your last comment, and I quote you: “Amit posted his essay and asked readers what they thought of it. And some people gave their honest opinion. How can that be considered “argument†or “showing supremacy In other words: if you ask for an opinion, be prepared to accept criticism along with praise. I don’t see Amit complaining, so he’s perhaps mature enough to realise this fact.†Unquote
You have echoed my sentiments exactly. It is Harshad’s inner insecurities which made him construe erroneously that my comment was meant to “argue†and “show supremacyâ€. I just wanted to make my position clear, and that’s why I wrote here since I cannot & will not post on that blog anymore.
Cheers and good luck!

dude superstar, u seem to be equally pissed off with that amit or whatever guy!(as he was with u ?)
y u taking offense if u think amit shouldnt! :S …
i think we should call salman khan here; and make him sing “jus chil chil, jus chil”… haha!
November 1st, 2006 at 10:53 pm
What’s offensive about saying someone’s essay didn’t impress you? It’s your right to express your opinion, so long as you don’t abuse anyone or resort to ad hominem arguments.
So, if you have thrown your post open to discussion, it’s implied that you welcome diverse opinions. You are not expected to censor others unless their comments are spam, off-topic or inflammatory/offensive. Merely disagreeing with another person is not reason enough to ban him/her. We need to lighten up a bit and learn to take well-meant criticism in our stride.
Haochi, I appreciate the fact that you don’t “moderate” comments unless you feel there’s a valid reason.

Results? Reeesulttts? Where are You? Come on out, Result…We are waiting for you.
Well It seems the Result for GWM has gone and hid itself in some nook or cronny !!!
Now it is over 3 days past the result’s deadline and yet the result is not out.
How can Google goof-up, it is simply not expected from the leader, naaa God of the Web !!!
November 1st, 2006 at 11:20 pm
guyz guyz… relax. looks like we are taking out our ‘anger’ on google on each other here. try ‘meditation’, or some other sort of ‘anger management’ as long as it suits you. i’m sure even ‘einstein’ would agree. theres no reason for anyone to be ‘hurt’ in anyway here i’m sure. it would however,be advisable to ‘adjust’ the spam ‘control’ settings of your inbox (i speak this out of experience, because the invitation to attend the challenge i got from google was in my junkmail)….
November 2nd, 2006 at 12:20 am
Dear Praneeth,
You too have got it totally wrong. I am not/was not pissed with Amit. But I was definitely pissed with the overly-active/insecure moderator of that blog, Harshad. Had he not butted in without provocation, this matter would not even have got so far. It is because of his stupidity that a mountain was made out of a molehill. He should take a lesson from this current blog’s Administrator about the code of conduct of a Moderator. Anyway, as far as I’m concerned this matter is closed.
It is rather strange that Google has not declared the results yet. If anyone comes to know of the results, pls post it here for everyone’s benefit.
Cheers!

Google does not so far have any public page for the results, but I have got a mail from them saying i was shortlisted. So I guess we may have to wait for sometime before they do announce it formally.

Update: Wake Up, Google!
Note, this is not the result of the contest.
I will try to contact some Googlers and bloggers in India to see if they have any detailed information on this event.
