New Gmail for Google Apps
Apps, Gmail December 28th, 2007 - By Haochi
A reader of this blog sent in an email informing me that he’s seeing new version of Gmail in his Google Apps account.
I’m using Google Apps and this afternoon noticed that Gmail 2.0 has arrived. Fast indexing of emails, new contacts and labels. Working like a charm!
Just checked my Google Apps account for this domain and it’s still using the older version of Gmail. I guess Google is slowly rolling out this to Google Apps users. Make sure to check the “Next generation” option in Domain settings (in the domain’s control panel) if you want these new features earlier.
[thanks Alex.]

Love your blog, Haochi!
If you want Gmail 2.0 on your GApps account, you need to go into your Dashboard and check and save — “Turn on new application features to my domain before they are rolled out to all Google Apps customers” — on your Domain settings page.
Then you need to go here:
http://groups.google.com/group/apps-features/browse_thread/thread/517292c2f924bde4
And post a message there asking that Google actually “turn on” Gmail 2.0 for your account. The change process doesn’t appear to be automatic and all the 2.0 changeovers appear to be done my Google’s manual hand.
Keep up the good work!

David’s right. Turning on “Next generation” isn’t enough. You have to select “Turn on new application features to my domain before they are rolled out to all Google Apps customers” too.
I’ve got it enabled in one of my three Apps accounts — and I didn’t post anything to the Google Group so I guess I just got lucky…

Hey Tony!
It seems Google runs the updates in “batches” and they decide when to run a batch based on — IMHO — how many “Please turn me on! It’s been six days of waiting!” messages get posted to the GApps Group. SMILE!
It isn’t like you turn it on yourself and five minutes later you’re active. The delay is, unfortunately, unpredictable.

UPDATE:
Just saw this note in the the GApps Group:

Hi Everyone,
Our team found a small bug that prevented a small number of domains from seeing the new features when opted in. This should now be fixed as many of you have reported here in the group. If you’re still having problems please report them here. And please remember, the opt-in feature is for US English only, and can take 24 hours to take effect.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Google!

Let’s hope this means the unseemly delay is fixed.
