You know what I say to that? Who the heck cares? I think he’s a crybaby. I think it is a huge improvement personally, but I wouldn’t complain about it so much if I didn’t like it. Whatever though, ha ha. Oh and by the way Haochi, I would put an option to comment at the bottom of the post, not at the top, because people want to comment on something when they’re done reading it, not before ;)

I agree with Kent, Google tries to make it ‘universal’ so that users just type what they want but not choosing what they want before they enter the query so it makes sense the options are moved to the top left. And if you really need to switch, you can easily switch in the results page.
I don’t get the comment ‘Please note how wide my screen is’. Doesn’t Google’s homepage look that wide before.
And to Kent’s suggestion about the comment link, I totally agree as well. See if that could be done. ;)

Wait 2 weeks, then think again…. maybe you got used to the new interface?
You should just type your query in first, then you can refine by clicking…. it doesn’t matter if you click first and then query or vice versa. And note: on the result page, the other searches are really close… so you are at least as fast as

“Oh and by the way Haochi, I would put an option to comment at the bottom of the post”
Logically that seems correct but I use an RSS reader for your posts so when I jump to your post it’s only because I want to comment on it otherwise I’d just move on. I don’t wanna have to dig through the whole post again to just comment. So anyway to leave a ‘post comment’ option on the top as well?
PS Aesthetically, the new interface on Google looks pleasing functionally, i agree with the article - i hate having to travel that far every time on my clit-point or trackpad.

but I like the new design anyway

So what? That is probably the silliest rant I’ve ever seen and I don’t agree with him at all. I would much rather have space than a crowded area AND his screen width is rather his own problem that he created with no help from anyone.
The #1 annoyance I have with sites is having to click dozens of times to get to where I’m going. The distance for mouse travel is so incredibly trivial that it’s surprising anyone even bothered to complain. Sheesh!

LOL, screw the Google designs. :)-
I will see what I can do with my design here. (I been doing it for a while actually, but forgot where the file is…)

Well he could just use firefox in window mode instead of full screen. I have a 1680×1050 resolution and mostly use firefox in a window simply because almost no website requires such a resolution. If you have the browser at about 900-1000 pixels wide it really doesn’t feel that far away - and after you have entered the search query the search field moves to the top left as well which puts the search options right on of it - where you would expect it.
Must say: great design - miss the desktop-link though. probably gonna come with the next Google Desktop update.
